This years’ edition of the Balkan Offroad Rallye had everything – a fantastic off-road route from west to east, including all the highlights of Bulgaria! Starting near Sofia in the mountains, the rally crosses the most beautiful mountain ridges, heads east into the valleys, crosses the rich wine-fields until it reaches finally the beach of Shkorpilovtsi.
“As a competitor, we crossed no less than seven of the most beautiful mountains in Bulgaria”, says organiser Alexander Kovatchev. “From west to east Bulgaria you pass Verila, Plana, Rhodopi, Sredna gora, Sakar, Strandja, and Stara Planina. These are some of the most majestic mountains in Bulgaria, especially Strandja which has always been the Gate to Europe.’
Four bivouacs allowed the competitors to relax after the long days on the route: Borovets in the mountains, Starosel between the wine yards, Dyuni in the south and Shkorpilovtsi on the beach.
The Balkan Offroad Rallye has two categories: Cross Country – the classic rally-raid format with high speed driving on road book, open for bikes, SSV, cars and even trucks.
The Extreme Category originates from the old trophy scene, in which you venture off-track, find your own way and winch through the natural challenges. It is open for cars only, due to the specific terrain and adventurous routes.
